Dear Reader, I’m looking for a responsive freelance research assistant with multiple years of experience in academia. You should able to contribute to all stages of the research pipeline: – Answering specific research questions at my request – Preparing, setting up, conducting and recording the outcome of experiments, interviews and field work – Formatting, developing and conducting surveys – Using straightforward mathematical modelling or scientific computation; – Conducting literature and database searches reviews and writing up the results for me, or for publication or for presentation at conferences – Provide research support (copy-editing, proofreading, fact-checking, finding citations) as needed – Editing and providing feedback on draft manuscripts, and building systems to efficiently solicit, collect and synthesize feedback from others – Coordinating subject matter experts and other external collaborators – Other tasks aimed at increasing the efficiency, throughput, and impact of my research Here are some examples of the sorts of tasks you might be expected to work on (mostly drawn from tasks undertaken by past RA): – Read the literature on ‘digital literacy’ and understand it well enough to have a deep conversation with me about it – Briefly summarise the literature on the different conceptualisation of digital literacy – Explain in writing how behaviour scientists arrive at their surveys for the COM-B framework – Identify a handful of academics with expertise in areas of interest; invite them for a Skype conversation with me; prepare questions related to their research – Oversee a hiring process (like this one): identify a need for additional capacity, determine the parameters of a new role, work with me to manage a search, and evaluate candidates I’m are seeking candidates who have: – Ability to read, synthesize, and explain academic papers across a variety of fields relevant to my work (media/communication studies + psychological/behavioural science) – Exceptional written and verbal communication skills – Versatile competence and the ability to solve new, unfamiliar problems – Ability to contribute ideas for new research projects – Experience handling sensitive and confidential information – Strong initiative and drive to proactively pursue opportunities for impact – Ability to manage multiple work-streams and prioritise accordingly Desirable characteristics – A background in media/communication studies + psychological/behavioural science – Bachelor’s or Master’s in a relevant area – Familiarity with the ways and styles of academia – C1 English – At least 10h/week availability flexibly Current Task Contributing to the development of a survey What the offer is: – I will pay you 10-20$/h depending on qualifications or more if exceptional fit – I expect 50-100 hours over the next 6 months – The submitted work will be used to evaluate if the quality of work matches my expectations and future collaborations are worthwhile.
